Position: Third Grade Teacher

Biography:
Amy Vander Schrier grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania where she attended Gannon University for   Special Education and received a B.A. in Elementary Education at Edinboro University. She moved to Alaska in August 2004. She was soon hired as a long-term substitute for the Matanuska Susitna Borough School District at Meadow Lakes as a part-time special education preschool teacher. In the fall of 2005 a full-time Kindergarten position at Meadow Lakes Elementary opened and she was accepted for this position. She remained there for four years before transferring to Tanaina Elementary where she also taught Kindergarten. In April 2010 she completed an extensive Masters program in Elementary Reading and Literacy that included a strong emphasis on cultural diversity through Walden University Masters program. In her five years of teaching, she found herself involved in many school activities. She coached 4th and 5th grade girls’ basketball, 4th and 5th grade track and field, 4th and 5th grade cross country; she organized yearbook committees, and was the school MSEA representative. Amy is confident that this environment will not only foster the skills of the whole child, but will improve her teaching methodology.
